Affirmations for 2017

Affirmations for the New Year 2017

It’s the beginning of a new year and a time when some people focus on new resolutions.  They usually involve what they perceive as positive changes they desire in their life, problems they wish to solve, “bad” habits to break, or a statement of new goals they hope to attain. To support the resolutions, it can be helpful to use affirmations that are focused on for just a few minutes at a time daily or weekly throughout the period involved, usually for the coming year.

The affirmations and resolutions can help to program the subconscious mind by modifying consciously held beliefs that are limiting and acting as an obstacle to the fulfillment of desires and expectations stated.

The following article on affirmations is a summary of the ideas presented in the book The Nature of Personal Reality, by Jane Roberts.

I have taken the liberty to rearrange the order in which some of the original text appears for the purpose of clarity and continuity, eliminating other statements on equally important ideas. A complete discussion of the original text can be obtained by reading in full Sessions 669 and Sessions 672 through 677 in the book.

Session numbers are used in place of page numbers due to the many editions by various publishers over the years.

Although the original publication date of the title was 1974, one would be hard pressed to find any better discussion on the topic of affirmations. This discussion differs from many others in that it incorporates ideas from a worldview that may not be considered “conventional” or “mainstream”. It is drawn from a worldview that presents a very workable and exciting view of reality and how its events are formed.

Even as you read, if you feel skeptical about the ideas presented, I ask that you momentarily suspend your disbeliefs that may surface and at least try to absorb the meaning that is being communicated and the power that you have that is being sated.

It may only be unconsciously held fears that are preventing you from obtaining your stated resolutions. Fears that are rooted in core beliefs that lead to dysfunctional and limiting behaviors can be overcome. These affirmations are here to help in that process.

May all your expectations come true and may all your expectations be the best ones for you and all concerned that may be helpful in your journey. Intentional accomplishments that are at someone else’s expense are never the best ones for you.

I hope you have a very fulfilling 2017 and beyond.

[The text below in quotes is taken from the book by Jane Roberts:
The Nature of PersonalReality, Sessions 669, 672 – 677.The order of occurrence has been changed in some instances.]

“Affirmation means the loving acceptance of your own unique individuality. It may involve denial, where you refuse to accept the visions or dogmas of others in order to more clearly perceive and form your own visions.

Affirmation means accepting your soul as it appears in your creature-hood. You cannot deny your creature-hood without denying your soul. You cannot deny your soul without denying your creature-hood. Your core of being is as a soul in chemical clothes.

Such affirmation will lead you to your own inner discoveries, and attract from the deepest portions of your being the particular kind of information, experience, or perception that you need.

You as a soul are above all, a fountain of energy, creativity, and action that shows its characteristics in life precisely through your ever changing emotions. You cannot have a physical self without emotions anymore than you can have a day without weather. Emotions follow beliefs. The loving acceptance of your self will allow you to ride through beliefs as you would through the changing characteristics of countryside. The more a belief encourages you to use your abilities and vitality, then the more affirmative it is.

Physical reality springs from your imagination, which follows the path of your beliefs.

Emotions are natural ever-changing states of feelings, each leading into another in a free flow of energy and activity- colorful, rich, glowing tints that bring variety to the quality of consciousness. To refuse emotions is futile. They are one of the means by which physically attuned consciousness knows itself. Emotions are not destructive. One emotion is not good and another one evil. Emotions simply are.

Emotions are elements of the power of consciousness filled with energy. You cannot affirm one emotion and deny another without setting up barriers. You may have tried to hide what you think of as negative feelings in the closet of your mind because you do not trust aspects of your individuality in flesh.

Dogmas or systems of thought that tell you to rise above your emotions can be misleading – even somewhat dangerous. Trusted, your feelings will lead you to psychological and spiritual states of mystic understanding, calm, and peacefulness. Followed, your emotions will lead you to deep understandings.

The normal intellect, oriented so precisely by beliefs to the inevitability of a one-focused kind of perception, is limited. Your brain insures your bodily survival and follows your conscious beliefs about reality. There is always a harmonious unifying connection between your beliefs and your activities.

A certain kind of affirmation of self allows the brain to tune into these more spacious methods of perception that are the natural characteristics of the mind. The kind of affirmation involved is one of transcendence, in which for a time you affirm your reality in flesh and at the same time state your independence from it – and realize that both of these conditions exists simultaneously. A dual perception takes place in which the spacious mind is activated. By “activated” I mean that you are suddenly aware of the spacious mind’s existence.

You will not use your spacious mind until you affirm its reality within yourself, and until you are ready to handle the additional data which will then become consciously available to one extent, or another. The spacious mind represents latent abilities of consciousness that can be more or less normal functions. Just as your muscles become more resilient with use, psychic abilities and intuitive powers do also.

Affirmation always involves the acknowledgement of your power in the present. Denial is the surrendering of your power in the present. Affirmation then is the acquiescence to your ability, as a spirit in flesh, to form the physical reality of your creature-hood. Your intent, images, desires and determination form a psychic force that is projected out ahead of you. You send the reality of yourself from your present into what you think of as the future.

Affirmation does not mean sitting back and saying, “I can do nothing, it’s all in fates hands, therefore whatever happens, happens.” Affirmation is based upon the realization that no other consciousness is the same as your own, that your abilities are yours and like no others.

Affirmation means saying “yes” to yourself and to the life you lead, and to accepting your own unique person-hood. That affirmation means that you declare your individuality. Affirmation means that you embrace the life that is yours and flows through you. Your affirmation of yourself is one of your greatest strengths.

Affirmation does not mean a bland wishy-washy acceptance of anything that comes your way, regardless of your feelings about it. You do not have to say “yes” to people, issues, or to events with which you are deeply disturbed. You can affirm your uniqueness quite properly at times by saying “no”. Individuality grants you the right of making decisions. This may mean sometimes saying “yes” or “no”.  Affirmation means acceptance of your own miraculous complexity. It means saying “yes” to you own being.

Affirmation means acquiescing to your reality as a spirit in flesh. Within the framework of your own complexity, you have the right to say “no” to certain situations, to express your desires, to communicate your feelings. Affirmation is the acceptance of your individuality in flesh. It is a spiritual, psychic, and biological necessity, and represents your appreciation of your singular integrity.

Biologically, affirmation means health. It means you go along with your life, understanding that you create or form your own experience, emphasizing your ability to do so. Affirmation is the acceptance of yourself in your present as the person that you are. Within that acceptance you may find qualities that you wish you did not have or habits that annoy you.

Simply knowing that you form, or create your own reality can free you from some limiting concepts that have held you back in the past. This conscious knowledge alone will trigger intuitional responses within the inner self, so that you will receive helpful information through dreams, impulses, and ordinary thought patterns.

The dream world operates as a creative situation in which probable acts are instantly materialized; laid out in actual or symbolic form. When you ask others to interpret your dreams you are automatically putting the fulfillment of your own potentials a step away.

When you ask another to tell you the direction of your life, then to some extent you keep from yourself the realization that you yourself possess it.

If you affirm the basic grace of your being, then this will automatically weaken the beliefs that you have that are contrary to the principle that you create your reality.

When you affirm your own rightness in the universe, then you cooperate with others easily and automatically as a part of your own nature. You, being yourself, help others be themselves. Because you recognize your own uniqueness you will not need to dominate others, nor cringe before them. You will not be jealous of the talents you do not possess, and so you can open-heartily encourage them in others. You will begin to trust yourself. You must begin to trust yourself sometime – I suggest you do it now.

The Point of Power is in the PresentSeth

You must not expect to be “perfect”. Your ideas of perfection mean a state of fulfillment beyond which there is no future growth, and no such state exists. Perfection is not being, for all being is a state of becoming. This does not mean that all being is in a state of becoming perfect, but in a state of becoming more of itself.

You are a multidimensional personality. Trust the miracle of your own being. Make no divisions between the physical and the spiritual in your lifetimes, for the spiritual speaks with a physical voice and the corporeal body is the creation of the spirit. You cannot fear your own being and expect to travel through it, to explore it, to explore its dimensions. First you must take the simple step of affirming your identity. That affirmation will release those attributes that you have and open up new avenues of experience.

Do not place the words of any guru, minister, priest, scientist, psychologist, friend – or my words – higher than the feelings of your own being. You can learn much from others, but the deepest knowledge must come from within yourself.

Trust no person who tells you that you are evil or guilty by reason of your nature or your physical existence, or any such dogma. Trust no one who leads you away from the reality of yourself. Do not follow those that tell you that you must do penance, in whatever form. Trust instead the spontaneity of your own being and the life that is your own.

If you do not like where you are, then examine those beliefs that you have. Bring them out into the open; there is nothing within you to fear. Tell yourself this often:

“My Life Is Mine, and I Form It”

Create your life now, using your beliefs as an artist uses color. You create your life through the inner power of your being, whose source is within you and yet beyond the self that you know.  Use those creative abilities with understanding abandon.”

Natural Hypnosis Exercise Form: Which You? Which World.

Within your own subjective reality are traces of all those roads not taken and all those abilities you have not used. You may think of yourself as primarily a parent, or mainly in terms of your job or profession.

As much as possible for now, for this exercise, forget the normal familiar light in which you see yourself, and consider your entire identity as you do the following exercise.

Write down all of your known physical abilities, no matter how trivial you think they may be, and whether or not they have been fully developed.

Likewise, write down all of your known mental abilities, no matter how trivial you think they are, even if they have not been developed fully.

Write down all of theinclinationsyou have had toward particular activities, even those you have only remotely considered along with those that have come vividly to your mind.

    Physical Abilities                 Mental Abilities                 Inclinations

The lists you have written down represent the varied probable characteristics from which you have chosen to activate your particular main interest. Out of all these attributes, you have chosen what you now consider to be your hard-bed reality.

To follow any of these directions, can enrich your existence and experience that you know, and in turn open up other probabilities that now escape you.

The main image of yourself that you have held has, to a large extent, also closed your mind to these other probable interests and identifications.

If you think in terms of a multidimensional self, then you will realize that you have many more avenues open to expression and fulfillment than you have been using. These probable achievements will lie latent unless you consciously decide to bring them into being.

Whatever talents you sense you have, can be developed only if you determine to do so. The simple act of decision will then activate the unconscious mechanisms. You as a personality, regardless of your health, wealth or circumstances, have a rich variety of probable experience from which to choose. Consciously you must realize this and seize the direction for your own life.

Even if you say “I will go along with all life offers”, you are making a conscious decision. If you say, “I am powerless to direct my life”, you are also making a deliberate choice – and in that case a limiting one.

Once every six months, do this exercise over and monitor yourself on the progress you are making in all of your change efforts. Using this in conjunction with the other two Natural Hypnosis exercises, re-evaluate and make changes in your expectations as you goals change. Each time, you should get closer to your personal "purpose in Life".

Are the results moving you in the direction of achieving the desired expectations, or outcomes? Do you feel you have taken appropriate action? If not, can you identify any lack of application of the ideas and processes covered in all of the post in this series on suggestion and Natural Hypnosis?

Natural Hypnosis: Accepting Desired New Beliefs

Natural Hypnosis: Accepting Desired New Beliefs

“Many people assign great power to a hypnotist, yet whenever you have the undivided attention of another; you act as a hypnotist to a large degree.

Whenever you have your own undivided attention you act as a hypnotist and subject simultaneously. You give yourselves post-hypnotic suggestions all the time, particularly when you project present conditions into the future. Suggestions that you give yourselves constantly operate overall as beliefs that are reflected in your experience.

Habitual thought patterns of either positive or negative aspects backed up by resulting action, or conditioned behavior, will be brought into your own life experience through what can be called natural hypnosis. This process is a natural function of your mind. I want to impress upon you the fact that all of this simply follows the natural function of the mind, and to dispel any ideas that you have about the “magical” aspects of hypnosis.” – (NPR S658)

This exercise will help you affect a positive change in any area of your life experience for which you feel dissatisfaction. The change will come about when you accept an empowering belief about the area of concern, and then let the old limiting belief you held previously fade away. As you do this exercise, you will be activating new biological patterns in your body.

Pick one area of importance and make that the focus of the exercise each time you do it for a designated number of days.  When you begin to see results in that area, then choose another area or belief to work with.

EXERCISE

1.       For 5 or 10 minutes a day at the most, use this method of natural hypnosis to accept into your subconscious, any desired new belief. Select one single, positive, empowering statement that summarizes the new belief you desire to accept.

2.       Once you are relaxed and feel centered, concentrate your attention as vividly as possible upon this statement. Visualize this statement on the screen of your mind express visually any way you feel comfortable with.

3.       Repeat this one single statement over and over while focusing upon it visually for this 5-10 minute time period.

4.       Feel the emotion of this statement in whatever way is possible for you – visualize the expression of joy and satisfaction you will emote when this has become a truth in your life. Your emotions are the element that gives this statement power.

5.       If you mind insists at first on wandering and running about, channel its images in line with your declaration. Visualize the results of it in your life in as many ways as possible at this time. Do this exercise with an “easy attitude” about it, without straining.

6.       Do this exercise as a “stand alone” exercise – do not include it at the same time, consecutively with other similar exercises. Each exercise should be carried out on separate occasions during any one day.

7.       Repeat the exercise for 3 days, without concern, and then reflect on your feeling about the wording of your suggestion. You may need to alter the wording until you are comfortable with it. When you feel you have the right wording for you, then continue using it. Some time will be needed to see the changes desired to be evident in your materialization.

8.       You need to continue the exercise until inner channels of neurological and biological patterns become re-patterned. Your own feeling will be your individual guide.

“Research has revealed that for some people, 3 weeks may be required. For others, there may be very quick results evidenced. If you do see quick results, continue the exercise. But, there is no need to do the exercise for more than 10 minutes on any occasion of working with it. Trust in the process – it is a natural process being put under conscious control.

Some people, for their own reasons, begin to believe in:

·         Illness more than health.
·         Poverty more than abundance.
·         Loneliness rather than affection.
·         War rather than Peace.
·         Physical reality is the only reality rather than just one version of reality. ·         Authority figures instead of trusting their personal validity and wisdom.

The beliefs of your conscious minds are followed in degree by all portions of the self – down to the smallest molecules and atoms. Your beliefs generate the proper feelings and imaginative endeavors characteristic of them. You hypnotize your very nerves, and the cells within your body, and they will react as you expect then to react. The unconscious accepts those orders given to it by the conscious mind.

If you are dissatisfied with the results in some area of your life, question the orders that you are giving in that particular arena of experience. The results may not seem to follow your conscious desires, but you will find, that they do follow your conscious beliefs, which may be quite different. When you set your longing against a present belief, there will always be conflict.

In hypnosis, the conscious mind is focused, intensified, and narrowed to a specific area – all other stimuli are cut out. This intensity of conscious concentration cuts down barriers and allows the messages to go directly to the unconscious, where they are acted upon.

The hypnotist is important in that he/she acts as a direct representative of authority. The hypnotist acts as a parent substitute. Society has traditionally taught you to look to authority figures for answers.”

You are now learning to be your own authority. “You are gods in training”.”

Natural Hypnosis: "You Are Your Own Hypnotist"

NATURAL HYPNOSIS: “YOU ARE YOUR OWN HYPNOTIST”

The following exercise will show you how you can utilize natural hypnosis in your daily life to better your experience. At the end of this summary you will find a separate worksheet that you can copy and work with if you are serious about making positive changes.

“In those areas in which you are dissatisfied, you feel that you are powerless, or that your will is paralyzed, or that conditions continue despite what you think of as your intent. Yet, if you pay attention to your own quite conscious thoughts, you will find that you are concentrating upon precisely those negative aspects that so appall you. You are hypnotizing yourself quite effectively and so reinforcing the situation.

You may say horrified, “What can I do? I am hypnotizing myself into my overweight condition (or my loneliness, or my poor health).” Yet in other facets of your life you may be hypnotizing yourself into wealth, accomplishment, satisfaction – and here you do not complain. The same issues are involved. The same principles are operating. In those positive life situations you are certain of your initiative. There is no doubt. Your beliefs become reality.

In the unsatisfactory aspects, you must understand this: There is also no doubt. You are utterly convinced that you are sick, or poor, or lonely, or spiritually opaque, or unhappy.

The results then, as easily and effortlessly follow. Natural hypnosis, in the terms given here, operates as well in one case as the other. What should you do then?

First, you must realize that you are your own hypnotist, inducing natural hypnosis. You must seize the initiative here as you have in other positive aspects of your life. Whatever the superficial reasons for your beliefs, you must say:

  ·  For a certain amount of time I will momentarily suspend what I believe in this area, and willfully accept the belief I want, I will pretend that I am under hypnosis, with myself as hypnotist and subject. For that time desire and belief will be one. There will be no conflict because I do this willingly. For this period I will completely alter my old beliefs. Even though I sit quietly, in my mind I will act as if the belief I want were mine completely.

Ø  If you feel that you are overweight, insert the weight that you think is ideal for you while you are following this exercise.

Ø  Imagine that you are healthy if you have the belief that you are not.

Ø  If you are lonely, believe that you are filled with the feeling of companionship instead.

Ø  If you are feeling poor, imagine that all of your financial needs are being met.

Ø  At this point do not think of the future, but only of the present.

Ø  Realize that you are exerting your initiative to imagine such situations. Here there can be no comparisons with your normal situation. Do not compare the normal situation with that desired vision you hold. Use visual data, and/or words – whatever is most natural and comfortable for you as being as you desire. Only about 10 minutes is required at a time, once per day.

·   If you do this faithfully, within a month you will find the new conditions materializing in your experience. Your neurological structures will respond automatically. The unconscious will be aroused, bringing its greater powers to bear, bringing you the new results.

·    Do not obsess constantly over this exercise. Do not try to overdo this, to go through the entire day worrying about beliefs, for example. This can only cause you to contrast what you have with what you want. Forget the exercise when it is completed.

·    You will find yourself with impulses that arrive in line with these newly inserted beliefs, and then it is up to you to act on these and not ignore them. The initiative must be yours. You will never know unless you try the exercise.

Now, if you are in poor health, and have a physician, you had better continue going to them, because you still rely on that system of belief – but use these exercises as supplements to build up your own sense of inner health, and to protect you against any negative suggestions given by your doctor. Utilize the belief in physicians since you have it.

The point of power is in the present. You must thoroughly understand that, and then you can take hold of your life and begin to use natural hypnosis for your benefit in all areas. It works advantageously for each of you now in those portions of your lives with which you are pleased.

In all situations, it is highly important that you do not concentrate your main attention in that area of experience with which you are least satisfied. This acts as a deepening of hypnotic suggestion. Just reminding yourself of your other accomplishments will by itself operate in a constructive fashion, even if nothing else is done. Such focus of attention on positive aspects automatically pulls your energy away from the problem. It also builds up your own sense of worth and power as you are reminded of adequate performance at other levels of experience.

Whenever you are trying to rid yourself of a dilemma, make sure that you do not concentrate your attention upon it instead -  concentrating your attention on your dilemma acts to cut out other data, and to further intensify your focus upon your difficulty. When you break that focus, the problem is solved.

In any area, great clues can be received simply through paying more attention to the conscious thoughts that you have during the day, for each of them serve as minute suggestions, modifying your behavioral patterns and affecting bodily mechanisms and other perceived “facts” about your life.”

Ideas, quotes, and steps for this exercise were taken from The Nature of Personal Reality by Jane Robert, Sessions 659-660.   Dream Awareness Network, Aug. 22, 2014 www.DreamAwarenessNetwork.org

The Power of Suggestion ; An Aspect of Natural Hypnosis

Posted on January 6, 2015 at 8:02 PM Comments comments (33)

The Power of Suggestion:  An Aspect of Natural Hypnosis

Repeated suggestion, whether from outside sources or from your own conscious mind as self suggestion will have a hypnotic effect on your subconscious mind and will establish neurological patterns within the body itself.

These conditions once created can be either impeding or empowering depending upon the nature of the suggestion. We must realize that even repeated subtle suggestions can play a powerful role in our lives. Only through increased awareness and monitoring our thoughts and verbal expressions can we begin to understand this phenomenon.

The real understanding comes when we can identify and change limiting core beliefs and all impeding beliefs attached to the core beliefs. Suggestion can then be used in an empowering way.  We are continuously employing Natural Hypnosis to help create the life we think we want for ourselves and all humanity. This is done naturally through the power of suggestion.

This discussion on suggestion is a preliminary discussion that goes with 3 other posts and associated exercises dealing with Natural Hypnosis. The other posts are:

1.       You are Your Own Hypnotist
2.        Accepting Desired New Beliefs
3.       Which You, Which World

For each of these summaries, there is an exercise that if done as outlined, can be a tool to help you achieve any New Year Resolution that you are serious about. Any goal you select, that is in harmony with your life purpose and personal blueprint for life, can be achieved if the proper tools are applied.

I could spend time filling a lot of space with words, sharing my personal experiences with suggestion over the past 50 or so years that enhanced my understanding of me, and my world, but this paper is not for that purpose. Instead, I will share the wisdom from a couple of my “teachers”.

First, a few passages from one of the books that was empowering for me in my past studies regarding the understanding of the “mind”, and my mind in particular regarding suggestion. I will then share several passages from various sessions of the Seth material that was received and written by Jane Roberts and Robert Butts during the period 1964-1984, as Jane received the material from an “Educator” known as Seth.

I can’t stress enough the importance of understanding the role of suggestive self- talk that we all engage in, that sooner or later; helps mold our bodies, health, relationships, and all other aspects of our existence. So, to begin:

“You must realize by now that your conscious mind is the “watchman at the gate,” and its chief function is to protect your subconscious mind from false impressions. You are now aware of one of the basic laws of mind: Your subconscious mind is amenable to suggestion. As you know, your subconscious mind does not make comparisons, or contrast, neither does it reason or think things out for itself. This latter function belongs to your conscious mind. It does not show a preference for one course of action over another.

It is true that different people will react in different ways to the same suggestion because of their subconscious conditioning or belief. The dictionary says that a suggestion is the act or instance of putting something into one’s mind, the mental process by which the thought or idea suggested is entertained, accepted, or put into effect.

You must remember that a suggestion cannot impose something on the subconscious mind against the will of the conscious mind. In other words, your conscious mind has the power to reject the suggestion given.

Each of us has their own inner fears, beliefs, opinions, and these inner assumptions rule and governs our lives. A suggestion has no power in and of itself except it is accepted mentally by you. This causes your subconscious powers to flow in a limited and restricted way according to the nature of the suggestion.”

The above passage in quotes is from the book The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy (1963).

Next, I will share several passages from the Seth material. This will provide a frame of reference to understand the impact of the other posts dealing with Natural Hypnosis and  how to use it to make dramatic and positive changes in your life.

The source books and sessions from the Seth material will be listed at the end.

“Now, we will discuss what you call suggestion in more practical terms, for your particular uses, It is necessary that its basic nature be understood. The ego simply cannot judge, as a rule, whether an action is a constructive or an impeding one, for the personality as a whole.  It can judge however, for itself whether an action is a constructive one, or one that impedes.”

“First of all, the unconscious is not a sponge, indiscriminately accepting material regardless of the considerations of your conscious self. All beliefs or suggestions are first sifted through your conscious mind, and only those you accept are then permitted their penetration into the other areas of the self.”

“Your beliefs act like a hypnotist. As long as the particular directions are given, your “automatic” experience will conform. One suggestion that can break through this is:I create my reality and the present is my point of power.”

"If you do not like the effects of a belief you must alter it, for no manipulations of exterior conditions themselves will release you. If you truly understand your power of action and decision in the present, then you will not be hypnotized by past events. In a manner of speaking, then, the suggestions you give yourselves constantly operate overall as beliefs that are reflected in your experience. “

“Many, who make a practice of “denying” negative suggestions from others, asserting positive affirmations instead, actually do so because they are so fully convinced that the power of negative beliefs is stronger than that of beneficial ones.”

“Much has been written about the nature and importance of suggestion. One of the current ideas in vogue holds that you are constantly at the mercy of suggestion. Your own beliefs are the most important suggestions that you receive. All other ideas are rejected or accepted according to whether or not you believe they are true, in line with the steady conscious chatter that goes own within your mind most of the day – the suggestions given to you by yourself.”

“You will accept a suggestion given by another only if it fits in with your own ideas about the nature of reality in general, and your concepts about yourself in particular. If you use your conscious mind properly, then, you examine those beliefs that come to you. You do not accept them willy-nilly. If you use your conscious mind properly, you are also aware of intuitive ideas that come to you from within.”

“Your beliefs automatically attract the appropriate emotions. They reinforce themselves through imagination; imagination and feeling follow your beliefs. It is not the other way around.  A brief innocuous enough example – If you meet an individual often enough and think, “They give me a pain in the neck,” it is surely no coincidence that you find yourself with a painful neck in future encounters with this person. The suggestion is quite a conscious one, however, given by you and carried out not symbolically but most practically, most literally. In other words, the conscious mind gives its orders and the inner self carries them out. The inner self brings about whatever results the conscious mind desires.”

“You constantly give yourself suggestions about your body, your health or ill health. You think about your body often, then. You send a barrage of beliefs and instructions to the inner self that affect your physical image. Your thoughts have a very definite vital reality. Beliefs are thoughts reinforced by imagination and emotion concerning the nature of your reality.” Repeated thoughts then, are repeated suggestions.

For example, “When you say, “I am tired,” mentally you are not only giving silent messages to yourself – I say messages rather than message because the general statement is broken down; many portions of the body must be affected before you feel tired – but inside this the inner sound value of the messages automatically affects the body in just that way.”

“What should you do, then, if you find yourself feeling tired? This is your conscious assessment of your body’s reality at a given time. You want to change it so you do not reinforce it. Instead you say mentally that "the body can now begin to rest and refresh itself". You take your initial judgment for granted without restating it, and instead, suggest the remedy to be carried out (positively).”

“You can if the conditions warrant, physically rest by lying down or making whatever adjustments seem appropriate. If none are possible then several such suggestions – that the body can refresh itself – will give you benefit. To tell yourself over and over that you are tired, however, reinforces the condition. The inner sound value of the countering suggestion automatically begins to refresh the body. “

The Seth material contends that every thought, or suggestion, that we entertain, has an impact on our body and affects our health. Happy, empowering, or peaceful thoughts can help keep us healthy, while fearful, limiting, or negative thoughts can help bring on disease. The material also says that we all send and receive suggestions telepathically that affect us unconsciously.

“You must understand that telepathy operates constantly.  If you continually expect an individual to behave in a particular manner, you are constantly sending them telepathic suggestions that they will do so.   Each individual reacts to suggestion according to the specific conditions existing at the time.”

“An individual will to some extent or another act according to mass suggestions they receive.  These mass suggestions include not only those given to them by others, both verbally and telepathically, but also those given to themselves both in the waking and dream states. If an individual is in a state of despondency, this is because they have already become prey to negative suggestions of their own and from others.”

“If you see someone and think that they look miserable – or that they are an incurable drunk, then these suggestions are picked up by them subconsciously, though you have not spoken a word, and in their already weakened condition the suggestions will be accepted and acted upon.”

“If on the other hand, under the same circumstances, you stop yourself and say gently to yourself, “They will begin to feel better now”, or,” their drinking is temporary and there is indeed hope here”, then you have given them aid, for the suggestions will at least represent some small telepathic ammunition to help them fight off the war of despondency.”

“There are obviously ways in which you mold your own conditions, protect yourself from your own negative suggestions and those of others. You must learn to erase a negative thought or picture by replacing it with its opposite. “

A phrase which can help here is one I learned several decades ago (can’t remember now just where I picked it up). Whenever you catch yourself making a negative comment about yourself or another, just say to yourself, “Stop, Erase, Rewind, Rephrase”; and turn the suggestion into a positive and helpful one.

“If you think “I have a headache”, and if you do not replace this suggestion by a positive one, then you are automatically suggesting that the body set up those conditions that will result in the continuation of the malady. “You should tell yourself frequently, “I will only react to constructive suggestions”, for this gives you some protection against your own negative thoughts and those of others.  A negative thought, if not erased, will almost certainly result in a negative condition; a momentary despondency, or a headache, according to the intensity of the thought.”

“If you do find yourself with a headache, say immediately “That is the past. Now in this new moment, this new present, I am already beginning to feel better”. Then, immediately turn your attention away from the physical condition. Concentrate upon something pleasant, or begin a new task. In this way you are no longer suggesting that the body reproduce the headache conditions.”

“It does not do to repress negative thoughts; such as fears, angers, or resentments. These should be recognized, faced, and then replaced.”  Remember, thoughts are suggestions!

To protect us from unwanted effects, a suggestion daily like “I live in a safe world; infinite intelligence guides me and protects in all ways in everything I experience”, will counter the negative suggestions that may be thrown our way.

Even though I could bring into the discussion other areas where suggestions play a big role, like over- all health, dream recall, or even the experience of astral travel, I will close with some thoughts from the Seth material that have far reaching effects on the world.

“There is an enchanting suggestion, solemnly repeated many times, particularly after the turn of the last century” (1900): “Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.” - The suggestion is from the work of the French psychotherapist, Emile Coue, (1857 – 1926).

“This might sound a bit  overly optimistic, though maybe delightful, nonsense. To a degree, however, that suggestion worked for millions of people. It was not a cure-all. It did not help those who believed in the basic un-trustworthiness of their own natures. The suggestion was far from a bit of fluff, however, for it could serve – and it did – as a framework about which new beliefs could rally. "

“We often have in your society the opposite suggestion, however, given quite regularly: “Every day, in every way, I am growing worse, and so is the world.” "You have meditations for disaster, beliefs that invite private and mass tragedies. They are usually marked by the polite clothing of conventional acceptance.

Many thousands may die in a particular battle of war, for example. The deaths are accepted almost as a matter of course.

These are victims of war, without question. It seldom occurs to anyone that these are victims of beliefs – since the guns are quite real, and the bombs, and the combat. The enemy is obvious. His intentions are evil.

Wars are basically examples of mass suicide – embarked upon, however, with all of the battles paraphernalia, carried out through mass suggestion, and through the nation’s greatest resources, by men who are convinced that the universe is unsafe, that the self cannot be trusted, and that strangers are always hostile.

You take for granted that the species is aggressively combative. You must out-think the enemy nation before you yourself are destroyed. These paranoiac tendencies are largely hidden beneath man’s nationalistic banners. “The end justifies the means.” This is another belief, most damaging.

Religious wars always have paranoiac tendencies, for the fanatic always fears conflicting beliefs, and systems that embrace them."

The power of suggestion can fruitfully, and practically be employed in your Dream Work also. That is another topic to address in a separate posting soon. Thank you for staying with this one till the end!

Don't let the publishing dates mislead you. The material is as current today as it was when it was published. In my opinion, it is the best broad spectrum explanation of Reality I have come across. There have been many teachers through out the centuries. Seth summarizes and expands a view of reality that is dearly needed today as we approach the mid 21st century.

Some current influential teachers feel civilization is at a crisis point, a turning point, a monumental decision point - "Are we going to grow, or die as a civilization"! I believe the Seth material shows us a path that leads to growth and expansion of consciousness. It can lead us to engage in "An Experiment That Has Never Been Tried" since the beginning of our civilization (the topic of another future posting)..
