Dreams Can Be a Writer’s Best Friend

As you can probably guess, this post from Dream Awareness Network will discuss how dreams have helped writers with their material; sometimes in great detail; sometimes with just a suggestion or impression.
In a small and delightful little book titled Purple Fables (Quartet), by Ingo Swann, he shares  fantastic dream experiences he had in April 1993 that not only delivered the title of the book he was to write, but the outline of the quartets that would subsequently be delivered on four consecutive nights.
This true story will open your minds to the unlimited resource available to all of us, if only we accept the possibility and believe in the validity of our “greater being”. I will share more about Ingo Swann in the future.

In Ingo’s own words:
One morning in April 1993, I awoke out of a dream with the title Purple Fables spontaneously glowing in my consciousness. I went to the computer and typed it in, and, internal whisperings said,

“There will be four, a quartet, each of which will be written on four consecutive days.”  There was the added “instruction” that the draft was not to exceed seventy pages altogether.

Then, the title “The Temple of Sanity” appeared, and the images of the boy reading the newspaper began dumping his tale into my visualizing mind, without any premeditation on my part.

The next morning the second title appeared, “A Clay–Modeling Lesson,” although some time ago I’d had a vague idea of this one and had typed out two pages of its content as an insert in something else I was writing.

On day three I receivedThe Fate and Destiny of a Traveling Clairvoyant”, and on day four, in what amounted to a supreme ecstatic experience, there followed the “dump” of  “Watcher of the Purple River.

I say dump because it was like turning on a computer and watching it automatically print out something of its own. I began writing as instructed, at about 6:30 in the morning, and by midday each of the four fables was completed, in four consecutive days.

I spent the fifth and part of the sixth lightly editing them, but they exist in the script mostly as they came out.I decided not to rewrite or intellectually embellish, or even cast them into more acceptable syntax, although some light  editing has taken place for this book.

Also on the sixth day I awoke with the Prelude and the Postlude which took all of ten minutes to type out, and which I was “told” belonged.”

In the forward to the book Ingo expressed that he was dumbfounded, transported, and thrilled beyond compare at having this experience.  I find this somewhat amusing considering some other experiences that Ingo has written and talked about. More about Ingo’s adventures will be covered in the article I am writing about the inner senses.

Being a long time student of research into the subject of Dreams, and having 45 + years of experiential learning, and journaling of dreams,  I have come to expect and accept magical experiences happening during sleep, when our dream activity is almost unceasingly communicated to us. Upon awaking, we often carry with us in our mind, the memory of these magical happenings.  They can be yours as well.
Throughout the course of history, there have been documented reports of great literature being received from the dream state. The number of reports is too great to ignore this experience, which validates the importance of dreams, not only in literature, but in all human endeavors within our civilizations.
Some other significant examples of literary works that came from dreams, to list just a few, are:
  • Samuel Taylor Coleridge ……………………………….Kubla Khan
  • Robert L. Stevenson …… Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde
  • William Blake …………. Art Work & Literature
  • Stephanie Meyer ………….. Twilight
  • Stephen King ………………..…… Misery
  • Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin…… Frankenstein
  • Richard Bach …..Jonathan Livingston Seagull
  • Robert Moss ….. Dream Ways of the Iroquois - Honoring the Secret Wishes of the Soul
  • Jane Roberts …. Emirs Education In The Proper Use Of Magical Powers
  • Jane Roberts …. The After-Death Journal Of An American Philosopher: The World View Of William James
  • Jane Roberts …. The Oversoul Seven Trilogy

Are there any stories in your subconscious, waiting to be dumped? There may be.
Only by believing in the validity of your dreams, and opening your mind to new possibilities will you discover hidden treasures. If not stories, then maybe songs, art, musical tunes, new ideas, inventions, directions, paths to follow, revelations, scientific discoveries, communication from distant loved ones, premonitions of the future, etc.; the basket of dream information in your subconscious may be unlimited.
Be persistent in your dream journaling and sharing your dreams with others. This will help you look deeper into the validity of the night time activity, and its importance.
Below, I will share some general wisdom from the Seth material, on the subject of dreams, in Seth’s words, as communicated through Jane Roberts.
From Session 653 of The Nature Of Personal Reality by Jane Roberts: …

“Your attitudes toward sleep, dreams, or any alterations of consciousness are all colored to some extent by beliefs concerning good and evil in your Western society. These emerge from the old Puritan work ethic: “The devil finds evil work for idle hands.”

“This kind of thinking by itself brings about an overall attitude in which rest is frowned upon, and dreams are considered suspect. Daydreaming and even mild alterations of consciousness take on moral connotations. Such ideas are mirrored in your society in innumerable fashions, and in areas in which values of good and evil are not apparent. Active sports are considered good, however, but often contrasted to passive intuitive activities which are then seen as bad.

“You insist upon a material product of some physically demonstrative kind. In that context, dreams or daydreams are not viewed as constructive or productive.

“Young people are urged to tackle life aggressively, but in the usage of the term, this means competitively. It also implies, and of course, promotes, the direction of individual consciousness in an exterior fashion only. Not only is consciousness to be focused to the external reality, but within those limits it is still further harnessed toward certain specific goals. Other inclinations are frowned upon. Such individuals are trained to consider any alterations of consciousness, any seemingly “passive” endeavor as dangerous to one degree or another.

“An artist will be tolerated only if their work sells well, for example, in which case it will be thought that the artist is simply trickier than most in discovering a way of making money.

“The writer is put up with if books result in either fame or fortune. The poet is scarcely tolerated, for usually his or her gifts bring neither.

“The dreamer whatever their age, job or family background is considered most suspect, for it seems that they don’t even have a craft to excuse their moral laziness. People with such beliefs will find it most difficult to understand the creativity of their own being. The work done in dreams, the multitudinous experience encountered there, will be invisible to them. They will have little regard or respect for the dreamers or visionaries of the world, and will be the first to leap upon those in their own generation who display such tendencies.

“Yet, beneath, the inner self is quite aware of the great thrusting creativity that occurs in dreams, and realizes that the source of individual energy has nothing to do with such superficial concepts as the nature of good and evil” ….
End of Seth talking

So, my recommendation to each of you is to pay attention to your dreams and take note of those “crazy” impulses that you receive during waking hours. The impulses are urgings from your psyche to pay attention, become aware, and take action; always to take some action.

A word of caution here; limiting beliefs and old voices telling you “you can’t do that”, may try to put a damper on your natural creativity. Value fulfillment for you may not be to write a novel, poem, or other form of literature; but your dreams and impulses may direct you into the areas of your life associated with your personal purpose and value fulfillment.

Listen and become aware of those messages from your psyche. The first step toward changing your life is awareness.

Some how my older brother came out, and I felt like was going to be saved but instead he held my arms down while my mother attacked me. It was the biggest betrayal I ever faced and when it was all done, I called my girlfriend and cried. I couldn't even talk I was in shock.

Dreams are our inspiration for all the experiences in our life.
We dream of something we want to achieve and we dream of something that can make us successful. Being a writer, I dream that my book can motivate and touch the lives of many people who read it. I wrote to express myself and my writings are the result of my undying passion as a writer. Everyone can write their own story, but only a few can write a great story.
